Reading Recommendations

If you feel moved to learn more about ecoculture, here are my reading recommendations:

Sam Thayer’s Books - Any will do! They are incredible, but he coined the term ecoculture in his 3rd book (Incredible Wild Edibles).

Wild Plant Culture by Jared Rosenbaum - Perhaps the most detailed practical ecoculture guide book available (focusing on the Northeast).

Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer - Provides a philosophical framework for ecoculture, which we’ve adopted in our Honorable Harvest Guidelines. Full with plant wisdom!

Tending the Wild by M Kat Anderson - Wonderful resource on indigenous practices for tending and cultivating food abundance in natural California ecosystems.

Restoration Agriculture by Mark Shepard - Great guide on creating highly productive edible landscapes, focusing on savanna ecosystems.

Edible Wild Plants of the Prairie by Kelly Kindscher - Title is self explanatory, but it has much ethnobotanical information as well! Imagine ecoculture gaining traction in the prairie!

Architects of Abundance by Lyla June Johnston - Incredible research of indigenous food cultivation practices!

Interested in starting up an ecoculture business? I can suggest a resource to check out:

Creating Viable Ecoculture Business Models by Andrew Wraith - Yes, Andrew Wraith, founder of the Ecoculture Project LLC, wrote this guidebook (work in progress), which was based on his capstone research project on starting an ecoculture business. It addresses funding, finding land, different business structures, and there’s more coming! The first draft is going to be published soon and made available as a research paper on the university portal. (link coming)
